Reference Department ServicesThe reference librarians maintain the reference collection, provide orientations on Library resources and are available for consultation. They also provide coverage and information at the Reference Services Desk. E-mail reference is availablefrom the Library web page, as well as a reference chat service. The Library has a non-circulating collection of reference materials (directories, pharmacopoeias, encyclopedias, etc.) as well as indices such as Dissertation Abstracts and reference works such as Current Contents. Special index tables have been set aside for patrons using these works. Many of the indices also have electronic counterparts available from the Library web page. The Reference area also includes terminals to search the online Library Catalog (OPAC) and computer stations to conduct Literature (database) Searching. Remote access for the Library Catalog and Literature Searching is available to all current faculty, students, and staff of the SUNY-Downstate campus. There is no charge for this service, apart from the telephone call. Inquire through Reference Services (x 7405) further information. Special equipment for reading reference materials includes: an opaque reader that enlarges printed materials and a microfiche reader-printer available for use to view and print microfiche holdings, such as Nursing Times.
